The Valentino Handbag
This afternoon, I received a call from JoAnn. She was at Nordstrom's. She was looking at a Valentino handbag. She says it is the most beautiful creation she had ever seen. It's beautiful, like a work of art, the leather so supple; she can smell it; she can look at it; she can feel it! And the price is only $2,000. She asks, can I have it, can I have it? My mind races. How can she do this to me? I am stepping out of a meeting to answer her phone call. Doesn't she think my time is important? Does she think I'm Don Draper? I'm going to have to rob a bank to afford this handbag. What do I say? What do I say?
Well, I don't know what got a hold on me and I can hardly recognize the voice speaking into my phone. But I say, "You're my princess; you can have anything you want."
I arrive at home. I want to ask, but I don't. I look at her. She looks at me. Finally she says, "I didn't really want that handbag." But, of course, I know she did. I don't know, really. Handbags are not so important. Money is not so imporatant. Relationship is important.
That was part of Michael's day.
