Blue skies, nothing but blue skies

It has been a very nice weekend. Dusted off my fifty-years-old eighty-power, reflector telescope yesterday evening and took advantage of the remarkably clear sky to observe the mountains of the Moon. I wondered what Galileo thought to himself when he first say these mountains. "Oh, shit. When the Pope hears about this, my ass is grass." Or maybe he was simply caught up in the wonder of it, like I was. I hope it is clear again this evening.

That's probably the best way to do it. By the time the moon sets, the skeeters are getting hungry. Great veiw of the 'summer triangle' from my back yard.

Yes, the night sky is something special. Where we are we have very little light pollution, and can lie back in the hot tub and enjoy. Doesn't look good for tonight though, at least on our side of the lake.

Waahhhh! It's cloudy tonight.

Absolutely the best night of stargazing for me was shared with my two daughters when they were ten and eight years of age. It was a very cold and very clear night in Casper, Wyoming. On an impulse, I invited them to get into the car and drive with me the fifty miles south to Seminoe Dam, altitude 7000 feet above mean sea level. The Milky Way shined magnificently. Both of them have told me many times in the years since that it was one of the greatest gifts I had even given them. In these modern times, with all of the light pollution that exists, people do not really know the night sky.
