Attractiveness, Hot or Cute

Recommended Posts

My wife and I were sitting in the hot tub discussing some of our life style experiences. The one thing we chuckle about are the responses people provide when describing the general physical appearance of others and what the responses mean. We have heard responses as hot, attractive, cute and of course silence. Hot, attractive and no response seem self-explanatory. It’s the cute description that is bothersome to us. It seems being labeled cute is the kiss of death akin to the no response at all with politeness added. Is being labeled cute the kiss of death in meeting and moving beyond being friends? How does cute fall into the range of hot to silence?

To me cute and attractive would probably mean the same.... it would probably mean... they are attractive (or cute - and in the looks dept those are two different things but really hard to explain) but I probably wasn't into them for some other reason, sometimes there is no clear reason sometimes it's their personality, sometimes they may remind me of someone, or it may be something else entirely.

As for terming someone HOT, that is usually a straight up lust thing thing. I have no idea (or little care to get to know them and/or be friends) but I want to f their brains out.

Well I suppose its if its an honnest cute or a polite cute.

Honest cute would be 'doable' but not the kind of person you would have a fantasy about.

Polite cute is what is said when someone would like to be silent but can't because someone is expecting a reply.

Exaple: Friend1: "Let me show you a picture of my new girlfriend!"

Friend2: (1/2 second pause) "Shes cute, where did you meet her?" (to change subject)

Good point. I do this all the time with baby pictures (I've seen very few babies that weren't ugly... but there's no way I'm going to say that to the baby's parent... so since you can't say nothing... "awww.. how cute".

Don't worry Prettylady, I am in the same boat you are. I will never be the classic beauty, but damn it I am cute! And I am ok with that. Bear loves me no matter what. But when it really comes down to it, looks are in the eye of the beholder. What is pretty to one person may not be so pretty to another.

These people were right...

The others were just bashful ;)

I have never wanted to be hot as much as I do right now...

It's weird, isn't it? There really are a million compliments and every one means something different.

I have been described as attractive, beautiful, and cute. Never hot. I'm not thin enough for "HOT". Atleast that's the way I view it. Well - J. has called me hot, but he sees my naughty wardrobe, and no one else does, so he's biased. ;)

I am sure you have been "hot" more often than you think ;)

Men should come with a scrolling marque on their forehead. It would say exactly what they were thinking all the time. You would be wildly flattered, unquestionably disgusted, incredibly offended and surprisingly turned-on...

It'd be a good/bad thing ;)

But you wouldn't say things like "never hot."

That theory doesn't hold true in our house. Gator doesn't think thin is hot. So, I daresay, you'd qualify for HOT in his book and he hasn't seen your naughty wardrobe. ;)

Interesting exercise in semantics. When I think "cute", I think of a smile and a bubbly personallity. A Meg Ryanesque type person. When I think "attractive", I think more of the classical beauty of a young Elizabeth Taylor. When I think "hot", I think more along the lines of ALL the lovely ladies here on Swingers Board! Since the cute and the attractive are already taken, all of you hotties feel free to lavish your attention on me any time you want!

I prefer cute people. Of course, cute has it's own definition in my mind that would be far too difficult to explain without citing examples.

And I have seen the same woman be hot and cute, at different times.

I guess if I had to articulate that... Sometimes I see a woman that by what the social norm is, would be hot. I look at those people, but often simply move on. But once in a while I see a woman that is cute. And well, she is usually your "average" good looking girl, but she has that special something that really gets my mind going. Usually a pretty face, smile, or way they carry themselves.

I hope that got my point across, but it still doesn't define what I think a cute person looks like... But I don't think I know, I think I just know when I see it.

Oh you are a smooth one aren't you chip

I subscribe to the Julie way of thinking - cute is not a bad thing, but hot means my brain has shut down from lust and I just want to rip your clothes of and love ya silly.

Well, I think the general thought is do get wrapped around the axle about differentiating between hot, attractive, cute ect... It is what it is.

Thanks Guys. Have a Happy New New!!

When I was a teenager in prehistoric Oklahoma, "Cute" was universally used as a term for someone one would like to date (or fuck, I suppose). In the movie "Stake Out" one of the male leads remarked, "Damn, she's cute!!!" I understood his meaning completely.

Standing on the observation deck of the Eifle Tower, I once overheard an American lady say, "Paris is so cute!" Somehow, it just didn't fit. :)

I'm going to go with "fuckable" or even more. :)

I've found that the same person could be hot or cute or attractive or beautiful just depending on the context of that moment. Usually, I find that I'll call someone cute in the context of a fun or funny moment. Don't think it's a kiss of death though!

Another way to look at it.

Cute is subjective.

Hot is universal.

Now there will be exceptions to the rule of course, but unless your sexal preferances are far out of the norm, 'hot' will be attractive to you.

Cute on the other hand is a case by case basis. Women who my wife says are 'cute' I often find unattractive. Likewise my 'cute' she doesn't always think are good looking.

On a side note I can identify 'hot' guys. For the most part these are guys who would look good if they were wearing a dress, but I can't identify 'cute' for males. In fact I have no idea what makes a male attractive beyond the 'if they would look good in a dress' criteria. As for the dress thing, here is how you do it. Think of a "HOT" guy, now put him in a dress in drag, if he would make a good drag queen (without augmentation) hes hot. Saddly, I don't think I'd look good in a dress but I've been called cute quite a lot ;)

When Mrs. Alura and I go out to dinner, we often add $1.00 or more to the tip depending on the waiter/waitress' "cuteness quotient." Neither of us is good at figuring the "cuteness quotient" of people of our same sex. Therefore, she calculates the tip for the waiters and I do it for the waitresses. We do consider the quality of the service, too. :)

All of the posts make a lot of sense.

Mister LM and I use the term "cute" often, and to us it first determines how their face looks. It's usually someone who is a petite pixy female with a great smile, bright eyes and looks like she would be great fun...we also usually consider her hot and sexy.

In the movie "Stake Out" one of the male leads remarked, "Damn, she's cute!!!" I understood his meaning completely.
You bet you can, Alura! I think being called cute, and how one interprets the meaning is all in the tone of voice and body language of the person making the statement.

I don't recall anyone ever calling me cute. But I wouldn't mind a bit if they did.

I have referred to many babies as cute, some were, some were ugly babies.

When I call a person cute it is a compliment. Cute guys are quite sexy to me. Cute to me is a person with a great smile, you know the kind that lights up their entire face, but it is also more there is just something about them that makes me want to be with them. But then again I like the guys that seem just a bit shy, the ones that I can make blush. ;) Something about the touch of innocence combined with a touch of pure masculine desire. facelick

From a strictly UK male perspective, in their respective haydays: Meg Ryan was cute. Goldie Hawn was cute. Kylie Minogue is cute. Jennifer Aniston is Cute. Kirsten Dunst is cute. Susan George was cute.

Are they classically beautiful? No.

Are they generally regarded as being pretty? Well,...yeah,...but sort-of.

If they weren't highly sucessful filmstar sex symbols could you imagine them working the checkout at your local supermarket? Hell yeah (unlike Marylin Monroe or Brigitte Bardot or Raquel Welch or Angelina Jolie).

That's cute.

I know which of the above lists I'd prefer to belong to.

Give me cute anytime.

When I say "cute", it can mean so many things. Our pets are "cute" in the things they do. Kids are cute. Heck, if you listen to women talking to each other long enough, curtains and shoes and practically everything else is "cute". ;)

If I use that word toward people in the Lifestyle, it often means (for me) something about their sparkling personality, their smile, the part of them that attracts me that isn't just about their "hot" looks. A person can be cute and hot to me. Or they can be cute but not hot, or hot but not cute. I often tell my husband, "you're so cute" when he's being cute (cute can be a verb)! I think that he's cute and hot.

I definitely don't think that being called cute is the kiss of death. :)

In a way I think cute is more who you are rather then how you look.

There is something sweet and innocent in cute.

When it comes to likeablity(?) Cute people are the ones most people want to be around. Hot can come off a little cold...does that make sence?

I am cute. I love being cute, many of you have called me too cute for words, or your too cute to be sarcastic. That is fantasitic in my books.

I can look the part of hot, I just can't play the part.

I laugh and smile too much to pull off hot.

Your incurably cute friend,

Prettylady

I want to be cute the way Prettylady just described it. But, I don't think people call me cute. I asked Mr. Tybee about this. He says that "cute" is the kiss of death, especially around here (he grew up here). I guess it's sort of like when southerners say, "bless her heart". I still want to be "cute", though!

Ahhh... I do love these distinctions. If I'm looking at profiles and say to my husband, "Oh, she's cute!" it's usually means, she's not classically beautiful, but there's something about her that you're really going to want.

So...does Mrs. Chicup think I'm unattractive, "meh", cute...or hot? I realize she doesn't have much information or many pics to make a decision, but hey, this is a "first impression" type of situation, right? ;)

Well, actually, if I don't know, I'm okay with that, and I still respect Mrs. Chicup, at least for all she's been through. :)

For me being a ugly Ole Bear. Hot is whats dreams are made of. Attractive is someone I might be able to get with and cute the type of lady that any more really attract me. They are down to earth simple ladies that don't seem to put them selves on a pedestal. I am much more attracted to the mom next door type. I pay more attention to the personality then the looks even though the looks are the first thing we all notice.

Well...Thrax is just hot...especially with those festive lights draped on him. lol :facelick:

Seriously, I have moments where I think I'm cute. HOT chicks can be intimidating to me...I mean, technically it's not a competition but if ms uber hot walks by...please, I don't stand a chance. (I'm a realist )

Now as far as applying hot/cute/attractive to men...well, there are the classical GQ types (that might fall into attractive or even hot categories)...and then there is 'hot to me'...which is very subjective and has lead me to have interest in a wide/varied types of men.

Cute has the connotation of dainty. Babies are cute, puppies are cute. And there are some women who are just cute. We are attracted to them because they are cute, as opposed to striking, beautiful, classy, statuesque, homely, ugly, pretty, etc.

A girl I have played with a couple of times recently is really just cute. She is a bit under 5 feet, with dainty, perfectly proportioned features, and a very well toned body. She has a radiant smile, dazzling personality, and mavelous skin. She is sort of pretty, but not quite. I am very fond of her; she's just as cute as a button.

Cute to me usually implies small & perhaps impish also. Nothing unsexy about cute! Cute is hot!

We had a funny experience a couple of weeks ago. It was on a Sunday and we'd just come back from a full weekend at a hotel party. Our neighbor came over to drop something off. When she left, I exclaimed to my wife that our neighbor looked so cute in her little skirt and glasses that I had a hard time restraining myself from flirting. My wife said that she had the same problem -- she had to work to hold herself back from kissing our neighbor! We laughed like crazy people.

This is off topic, but it's hard to switch back to vanilla behavior after a sexy weekend (or week -- we have to really, really watch ourselves after coming back from Hedo!).

How does cute fall into the range of hot to silence?

:male:

Cute is the holy grail for me. Cute gets my attention in a way that pretty can't always achieve.

I see pretty as an absence of flaws. It's nice, but it doesn't always grab your attention. Cute builds on that. Cute is something layered on top of pretty that draws you in and won't let you go.
