How and where did you meet your partner?

Recommended Posts

So for all you couples out there, I'm curious where you all met each other? The reason I ask is that I need some places where I can look for some nice women... I can't seem to find any anywhere! ack! And I'm actually really curious to know if you don’t mind telling :)

After a bitter divorce & 4 years as a single parent, I was staying away from the bar scene ( any one I met there hightailed it anyway as soon as you mentioned you had kids at home) and living in a rural area, I had become comfortable at being single. One day I ran across a Christian Singles Magazine that circulated the entire state and thought why not try this. I met a wonderful woman ( never married, no children ) who lived 200 miles away and we have been married 8 years. We started this lifestyle about 6 months ago and she as well as I are really enjoying it.

Now with the internet you have so many more options, just don't blind yourself by not looking at areas that are farther away. If you really love someone distance isn't an issue.

My husband and I met over the internet. We were both members of the same singles website. He sent me an email and I remembered I'd scanned his profile just a few days before. I was dating someone else at the time, but knew that my husband was someone I wanted to get to know better. We've been together for almost 4 years and married for 18 months.

My wife and I started out as friends. She was in school and working at a restaurant and I rotated shifts. She had a long drive home after the restaurant closed and then had to return to my area the following day for class. To make along story short she started sleeping on my couch to avoid the drive and ten years later she still hasn't left. (thank God)

She was standing at the back of the bar looking absolutely gorgeous and I was up on stage trying to concentrate on the song I was trying to play. After the gig we continued the party at a house behind the bar and woke up fully dressed in each others arms, each with a terrible hangover and a new best friend.

That was twenty years ago, and we're still on the honeymoon!

We went rollerskating together in 5th grade. I moved away in 6th and when I was 18 I worked with his mother who kept insisting that I had to become her daughter-in-law. He was in the Marines and I am such a sucker for a man in uniform. And the Marine dress blues are the best!! 20 years later, she can't complain because she is the one that picked me out for him.

We've been together almost 14 years and married for 12 1/2...

Mari and I met when she was a senior in HS and I was a year out of school. I dropped by the school to see some friends (I had been away at college) and I interrupted her drama club rehearsal.

Fortunately, it seems as though she's forgiven me. :D

PS curious24, I'm sorry this doesn't help your situation much. I wouldn't recommend cruising high schools... ;)

J and I met at our 5 year high school reunion. "How's that?", you ask. Well, there were about 700 in our senior class, so it was hard to really know everyone. Now high school wasn't exactly my favorite place, and when the invitation came for the first reunion I wasn't going to go. However, a friend of mine didn't want to go alone and she talked me into going. She ditched me and I ended up at a table with a girl I knew, but didn't much care for, and J, whom I didn't know. To avoid having to talk to the first girl, I started a conversation with J. One thing led to another and here we are 22 years later. We're still friends with the girl who talked me into going and believe me, we thank her often!

Curious24,

I don't know if any of this has helped you figure out where you can look for someone, but I have enjoyed this topic so much. I love learning how other couples met too.

But one thing should be becoming obvious, there is no one place in particular that people meet. And you usually meet that special person when you're not looking.

Do the things you like to do. That way you're around like minded people. There's bound to be single women doing the same activities. And relax, when the timing is right, she'll come along.

Best of luck.

I just spent 1 hour writing a letter to this question and heard a "goodbye". So all was lost! I met my husband in a bar and instantly in lust. married for 11 years..not all happily. I am a very sexual person and sure doesnt seem to happen at home.I have had more "encounters" that shouldn't be nessesary(?)if he "rammed it home" more often I would have a bigger smile on my face. So yeah, i am one of those single (but married)women you hear about..horny as all get out.

 haha... that is really funny...

but that's why I never go to the mall (well that and I dislike the mall a lot) but nowadays a 13 year old girl can look like she's 20 or older... it's really scary.

I've really enjoyed hearing about it too! that's one of the reasons why I started the thread. :)

But I think I'm getting to the point that if I see a woman I would like to talk to, no matter what she's doing I'm just going to approach her and say hi.

hmmm... wonder if that would freak a lot of them out? hmmm...

R and I met at a mutual friend's wedding shower. I saw him sitting in a black leather chair and fell instantly in lust.

(With him, not the chair.) ;)

My husband and I met in 1st grade. Went to school together through a good part of high school and were friends. Lost touch as you often do with high school friends. Anyway, I ran into him again when he was a room mate with a friend of mine and my sister's boyfriend (now husband). This was 10 years out of high school.

Since we met again, have been together 10 years, married almost 7 years. Sometimes the person that you were destined to be with you have known for most of your life...

My husband and I both worked for the same company in different cities. I went to San Francisco to take a class. He was my instructor. We are both network engineers. I only say this because he wasn't used to having some blonde haired blue eyed knockout (his words) walking into his class. I was staying at my sisters house which is about 30 miles from SF. Of course being the nice guy that he is, (yeah right he wanted to get laid) :fun: he offered to let me stay with him in the city. I took one look and thought "hmmm he looks like fun". I stayed with him and had the best sex I'd had up to that point in my life and decided I should keep him. 4 years later things are still wonderful.

This is more than likely not the best place to meet someone but heres our story...

My cousin always introduced me to all his friends and told them all to stay away or he would kick their butts...haha he was very protective of my sisters and I. Well He was killed about 6 years ago and the night he died I ran into Adam. Didn't know who he was and he told me that he had been friends with my cousin for years. Well after the funeral I got out of Rehab (for drinking) and we started talking and haven't been separated since. It turns out that we had been to a few of the same parties and my cousin just never introduced us because we both were heavy partiers and more than likely wouldn't have made it. But after his death Adam quit drinking also and it has all worked out. We miss him terribly but thank him all the time for knowing what was best for us.

Congratulations on kicking the booze habit, bimrdcpl. In my experience it's one of the worst drugs out there. Good job!

Thanks a lot!!! It means a lot when someone tells you good job. We have been very fortunate to have a good support system for the past 6 years for the both of us. It is not easy but it is worth it.

She was working in an art gallery on campus. My roomates and I stopped by one day on the way up to dinner to check her out. I checked her out. Still haven't returned her. That was over 20 years ago. Imagine the late fees if I ever brought her back!!!!

Hubby and I met while I was bartending after separating from my first husband. He came in hungover and asked for a "coke" and watched some nascar race...I kept glancing at him and was introduced to him by the owner of the bar who tried to fix us up but to no avail that night but we did get together and ten years and two kids later i am still serving him his coke....the point is I met him without expecting anything and it has been an interesting journey :)

LOL, this is too funny! We met in 7th grade. She sat in front of me in homeroom and hated me. She was a goody two shoes and I was a punk. In 9th grade we started dating, got married at 22 and have been for 22 years now! She's still a dream!!

I had gone out to a bar with a coworker on a spur of the moment whim at the end of our shift. When we got there, we each ran into some people that we knew, so we partied up until last call. She was talking to a guy at the end of the night and introduced us. We have been together for 10 years now.

We were in the same grade in school. I flirted shamelessly with him (usually in band class) until he asked me out our Junior year. Got married a year after graduation - 16 years ago! :)

I'll bet your cousin is smiling on your relationship knowing that two people he cared so much about have found a healthy path together. :)

Congrats to you both.

I was never planning on marrying when my close friend introduced me to his brother and it was "love at first sight" that I never believed in only "lust at first sight".

Maybe that if you quit looking maybe they'll find you.

Some comments on the singles thread got my gears turning and I thought that it might be fun to hear some different places that you have met that someone special.

I met my hubby at the movie theater. Actually after the movie let out. He was hanging around outside with his buddies and I with my girlfriends. He was so darn cute that I just had to talk to him. We ended up sitting in the parking lot talking until 4 am. The next morning I told my mother that I had just met the man that I was going to marry and that I was moving to Louisiana. She thought that I was crazy, but a year later she found out otherwise, and here I am.

I also met a great guy in the laundry mat. I hated going to my mothers because at the laundry mat I could use five washers if I wanted to and get everything done quickly. And one day there was a guy in there that started talking to me while we waited on clothes to finish and we just hit it off. Although he didn't turn out to be the one, we remained great friends for many years after that. I wonder what ever happen to him?

What a cool topic Roxy!

I sort of knew my hubby for several years before we actually 'connected'. He was a contractor for the hotel that I worked in. (And before ya'll go crazy...NO I wasn't a working girl in that sense! ) We basically knew of each other in passing through various renovations being done and quite honestly I had no physical attraction for him as he was much different than most that I lusted after. He was a nice guy, we chit chatted on occasion, I probably cursed him a few times since certain projects were not either done or looking to be done on time, and that was it.

THEN... one day he walked into my office and closed the door part way and asked me if I would like to grab some breakfast with him. He knew that I had worked all night and I still tell him that he took advantage of me in a weak moment. (I looked like something the cat drug in.) I'll never forget the absolute fear/excitement that I felt at that moment. To this day, I can remember exactly what he was wearing and can still visualise the look of fear and innocence on his face. Due to my schedule at the time and his, we did not end up going out together until about 3 weeks later. The rest is history. Ten years later we are still going strong. :)

I love these kind of conversations, Roxy. Too cool.

My husband and I met over the internet. We were both members of the same singles website. One day I got an email and recognized the name as one who's profile I'd scanned not more than a couple days before. I read his email, reread his profile, like the pic and answered back. After meeting for lunch once, I knew I wanted to see him again. I almost blew it by telling him that I was dating someone at the time (you know, one of those it's better than being alone dating things, lol). Luckily he didn't drop me then and there.

A little while later we got together again, and I knew I had to break up with the guy I was dating. I did that not too long after and Midnight and I have been together ever since. We celebrate our second wedding anniversary July 1. And have been together for 4 years later this summer. Doesn't seem like it's been that long, seems like just yesterday.

Midnight, thank you, baby. Kisses.

O.K, I will give you the edited, condensed version. After a nasty marriage & divorce, I had been single for Four years (a necessity to figure out who you are and where you want to be). Having custody of four young children (youngest being 3) and one child on dialysis (renal failure) I was having a very hard time meeting women who where willing to take on four kids. Don't get me wrong, I was dating a lot but as a man we are suppose to accept there kids, but ours are to much. I also made it a point not to pick women up at bars, didn't need any more problems then I already had. Not meeting people in my area I placed an add in a singles magazine. I was upfront telling them about my situation and with-in three months met Rhonda, A real catch, never had been married, wanted kids, had a very good career (registered nurse). That was 9 years ago and we have made a very good pair.

high school

Okay so we have been together a very long time, 18 yrs? I think. We've had some rough patches over the years too but we've worked through them, that has to count for something.

Swinging sort of takes the place of the social life we didn't have from 16-25 like most people did when we were too busy trying to survive.

There is a lot to be said for being 2 against the world. It does forge some very strong bonds. I can genuinely say he is my best friend and essentially we wouldn't be the people we are now if we hadn't matured together.

We met in Europe when we were working for the same company but in different divisions and in cities a couple of hundred miles apart. A series of unlikely circumstances caused me to visit Mrs. Alura's store. I took her out to dinner and we've pretty much been an item since. Yes, she's American, too.
