What the fuck is wrong with American culture? We can watch men, women, and children butchered in various vile manners, watch seemingly endless parades of programs about serial killers, vampires, and other creatures. But the slightest shot of a nude breast or bum is offensive? To who? Is our society so repressed that we act more like the Inquisition, than the freedom-loving people we are supposed to be? Violence has been proven to sell pretty well, and has a better lobbying crowd than nudity does.

 

Also there is the aspect that violence can be attributed to "evil" and as such can be shown and said "see this is evil".

 

Meanwhile you are looking for nudity to be put in a good light, which is a tough cookie since it's attached to sex, which is typically cast in a bad light.

My job requires me to go visit families at their homes periodically. Yesterday I was at the home of a gaggle kids aged 10 - 16. They were watching Dexter.

 

Now, I love Dexter, but seriously, Dexter?!?!? WTF?!? Makes absolutely no sense. Don't blame me if the little buggers grow up to emulate Dex.

I see the same thing, all of the time. Kids being "babysat", by the TV with no control over what they are watching. But with all of the violence on American TV what can they watch instead? I would like to see a channel devoted to the beauty and sanctity of the human body, but , alas, I don't think it will happen.

LustyLearning you hit the nail on the head. We are still operating in the 18th century with our thinking of nudity. There is noting more beautiful then the human nude body. If it was improper the almight maker, would have clothed us in feathers, or another form to discusie the beautiful form.

I was just thinking the same thing a few days ago, I totally agree!

 

I rarely if ever watch tv. Well, except for college football, which doesn't really count, it's seasonal But others in the house do, and they aren't the types to be seeking out blood and guts and gore, and still, so much of what I see through secondhand exposure just makes me shake me head. So that's not a problem, but a flash of a nipple would be a huge problem and the end of society as we know it? It's a WTF thing, I totally don't get it.

The only thing I watch on tv are sports games. I don't care about all the other trash on tv. I even stopped watching Hollywood movies over 10 years ago. Everything on tv and movies nowadays is trash. And having naked breast on daily tv isn't going to change how I feel about daily tv.

I am repeating myself, but that's why I like Europe - they have a healthier attitude towards nudity and much less violence. Many children are exposed to nudity (and alcohol) by their parents in a reasonable, mature, and measured way. Violence is not glamorized, there's no "stand your ground" fetish.

... People can be in their "stand your ground " mentality often and so go overboard without even realizing it. There's actually maybe even a endorphin rush attached to it. .

Too many males, and some women, like "vengeance porn." Then a few go out looking for their very own "bad guy" upon whom to bestow violence. I think that off-duty woman cop in Dallas who went into her neighbor's apartment "by mistake," shot, and killed him was one such person. She was just looking for an opportunity to shoot someone, otherwise why not back off and call the police? Her social media posts tell the same story. Same with the handicapped parking vigilante in Florida who was convicted of murder after starting a fight.

 

So why does Hollywood make these movies? Like the NRA, it's about the money. More importantly, why do parents let their children watch them? I'd rather have my kids see naked people.

 

Which brings up another distinction with European countries. In Europe, what distinguishes a movie sex scene (even with teens) deemed deserving of an adult rating versus one getting a mild PG is whether there is any violence or coercion. Consensual sex is fine, any use of force is not.

Maybe not much coverage on this case in Europe. The guy wasn’t convicted of murder, he was convicted of man slaughter. Big, big difference. Probably got man slaughter instead of murder because he didn’t start the fight. He was a busy body worried about an able-bodied person parked in a handicapped spot. Sometimes better to just mind your business. After being physically assaulted he drew his weapon. Assaulter turned to get in his car and got shot in the back. At that point he wasn’t standing his ground because the assailant was retreating. Had the assailant attacked after the weapon was drawn, that’s stand your ground. Had he walked up and shot the person for parking in a handicap spot, murder.

Cleve, I invite you to read history. The pilgrims were not rejected from England, they voluntarily left to go to the Netherlands and then to Plymouth Colony. Their underlying rationale for this was economic betterment, not religious separatism. In fact, the colony had a number of people who were not Pilgrims called Separatists who were tolerated.

 

I'm not saying that the society was always the most tolerant, but to blame our present problems on a mistaken view of a long lost people seems problematic to me.
