My wife and I are in a closed group of married couples with six other couples, about the large size you describe, but usually we don't all get together, maybe once or twice a month.  Usually, we break into two smaller groups for weekend get togethers, although the make up of the groups changes.  Sometimes the husbands and wives will be in different groups, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. 

Daniela and I started out hotwifing as they say, she played and I didn't, just so she knew that it was about her and I wasn't looking for more than her.  After a short while she wanted me involved first MFM with her play partners then traditional swinging, before we formed the closed group.

The point is seven is a large number but it works well because we can be flexible.
