Dailymail article on Florida "Villages" retirement community

Recommended Posts

So the Dailymail.co.uk posted this article exposing the Florida "Villages" retirement community as a hotbed for swingers.

We're not ready to coast into a Florida retirement yet, but it's good to know there is a place for us ?

Seriously though, does anybody here have any experience with this place or similar places?

"Exposed"? Like this hasn't been known for the last 25 years?

It was a fun little article, I liked the pictures. Thanks.

We’ve met people from there. I think they also have spirited political cross currents among the residents.

You could also retire at or near Caliente and Paradise Lakes near Tampa.

We have a second home in southern Florida in a vanilla community. Not sure we want to be surrounded by hijinks 24-7.

I’m not a big fan of the Brit tabloid press, and this nearly seven-year-ludicrous article contains numerous examples of why. I’m not into the elder-shaming, sex shaming as titillation or general looking-down-the-nose tone the “undercover” (really? Undercover?) writer has taken.

While on the subject of The Villages, I know there are some swingers who live there because of met them at parties in Orlando. But I also have older lifestyle friends who shun living there because of the lack of privacy. As one of them said to me (paraphrasing) “Everyone is into everyone else’s business.”

Indeed. We know a LS couple or two who contemplated moving to The Villages, and decided that it was not how they wanted to golden years to unfold (or unravel, as the case may be).

The core questions in later years--health issues aside--revolve around the balance between community and tranquility: whilst the image of "cheek-to-cheek" has its attractions, the image of "cheek-by-jowl" has decidedly fewer,  and neither seems inviting without the opportunity for respite. It is this paradox, namely that community is attractive only when retreat is easy, that faces couples approaching retirement. While retirement communities--vanilla, nudist, swinger--are attractive to some, they struck us as potentially nicer places to visit than to live.

This article is from 2014. There may already be an older post about it.

Full disclosure, my n-laws live in The Villages.

Do you know or suspect them to be swingers? Or too difficult to think about?

While visiting swinger acquaintances at their home in The Villages, I entertained myself one afternoon but checking SLS to see how many of that Website's members lived within a 10-mile radius. Upon returning to our rented condo in Lutz, FL, I did the same experiment. Result (admittedly unscientific) is SLS shows a far greater number of SLS members around Lutz than around The Villages.

I will admit that the article you posted is entertaining.

I prefer to be around people younger than myself.  I couldn't imagine living in a place where my friends and acquaintances are dying.

Who needs online connections when you can just go to the local bar and get what you desire.

Frankly, we're not at the age where this sounds fun at all. way to much living to do in the 'real world' but I've got no problem with old folks enjoying themsleves in any manner they please. As long as they are hurting anyone.

I think on swinger sites it's sorta common to say you live a town or two over from where you actually live.  That helps throw off people who sign up with the sole intent of finding out if any of their neighbors are swingers.  But, as you said, it's all pretty unscientific.

Yeah a few years ago this sort of thing wouldn't have been a consideration for us.  But now we're approaching our 50s, have already played with a few sexy 60ish seniors, and retirement is finally starting to look like it can actually happen for us so I am looking at these sorts of situations with interest lol!

Unfortunately, if you live a good, full life it will happen to you eventually. You'll find that you adjust, hopefully, by doing things that make you happy.

I thought I remembered something on this from a few years ago...   The Villages, near Orlando

I did find the article entertaining. I think mainly because I like the idea of people in that age group still living it up and having fun.  Everyone there like that?  I'm sure not, but I think pieces like that are a good reminder for all age groups that life doesn't end at 30, 40, 50, or whatever decade birthday is next after the current one they are in ?  Kind of like how when you are 40 then 50 sounds old, then before you know it, there you are yourself!

I met someone once who worked for the same outfit as me and had just a few months left before they could retire from there and draw a pension. He was super excited that it was all working out that within a year's time that he could retire from that job, and they would meet the minimum age / no kids requirements of moving to the Villages. That just seemed sort of odd to me, that someone would want to move there that young and with the nest just having been emptied. To each their own, but seemed to me to be getting into a little bit of a hurry on things.  He had a professional interest in the whole planned community aspect of it though, so maybe that was some of the attraction.

Too much for Mrs. Shy to think about. If I bring it up she either said “nope” or puts her fingers in her ears and says “la,la,la,la,la.....”

However, her dad had pretty major surgery a couple of years ago so she went to to help out her mom. While she was at their house a neighbor came by and gave them courtesy card, business card, or intro card with pic and contact info. I had to say hmmmmm, told ya.

Shy couple, your non-monogamy may be genetically inherited.

Seriously, I do wonder if there is a genetic component to it.

Only have second hand information as we have never been there. Plenty of older widows 70+ who are lonely as well as couples where the men are not able to stay hard looking for younger men.
