njbm 2,871 Posted November 24, 2021 Agree. Happy and healthy holidays to all! Our Thanksgiving gathering has been cancelled. My sister, the host, and her boyfriend attended a party for 50 indoors at a restaurant, maskless last Friday. Her boyfriend contracted covid and she has been in close contact with him. So did six other people at the party. So far, she has tested negative. Hope others don’t run into this situation. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

njbm 2,871 Posted November 24, 2021 Two Pfizer vaccines in early 2021. He was between getting a booster and getting a Shingrix vaccine recently and he chose Shingrix. So no booster. Bad move. I don’t think he is terribly ill. Quote Share this post Link to post
njbm 2,871 Posted November 24, 2021 (edited) We are friends with a lifestyle couple who had 2 Pfizer shots in early 21. No booster, may not have been available in early October. Weńt to a parkway rest stop no mask. Covid for 3 weeks, needed monoclonal antibodies. Had trouble breathing. Edited November 24, 2021 by njbm Quote Share this post Link to post

Hope your sister avoids problems. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Breakthrough infections do occur. Hard to pin down precisely where transmission occurred, of course. The monoclonals can be effective, and the newer nucleoside analogue antiviral pills can also work--provided they are administered early. Did the worst affected of the couple avoid hospitalization? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
njbm 2,871 Posted November 25, 2021 The husband was affected worse. I believe he went to the hospital to receive the monoclonal antibody infusion, but he did not have to stay. He told me he was very ill for three weeks. Are the nucleoside analogue antiviral pills available yet? I presume that they are the pills developed by Merck and Pfizer. Is there any EUA? When will they be available? If you know. We were happy to get Moderna boosters last week. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
couplers 4,640 Posted November 26, 2021 Monoclonal antibodies for diagnostic purposes and treatment have become important. Thanks to César Milstein and Georges Köhler, Nobel Laureates, who devised it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
